Assam to set up fourth agricultural college, first in Barak Valley

The Assam government announced the establishment of its fourth agricultural college, marking the first such institution in the Barak Valley region.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma disclosed that the state will soon inaugurate its fourth agricultural college, the first one to be located in the Barak Valley. The decision was announced during a press conference in Guwahati, where the minister highlighted the need for advanced agricultural education in the region.
The new college aims to address the long‑standing gap in higher‑education facilities for farmers and agronomists in the southern part of Assam. By offering modern curricula and research facilities, it is expected to boost productivity and introduce innovative farming practices to the valley’s predominantly agrarian communities.
The institution will be set up in a yet‑to‑be‑finalised site within the Barak Valley, with an initial intake of around 150 students across undergraduate and diploma programmes. It will be affiliated with Assam Agricultural University and is slated to become operational by the 2025‑26 academic year.
Local agricultural leaders welcomed the move, saying the college will create skilled manpower, generate employment, and foster collaborations with existing research centres across the state.
