Assam has revived the long‑abandoned cargo vessel link between Dibrugarh and Dhaka, with the first ship sailing to Bangladesh’s capital.
Assam’s government announced the revival of the cargo vessel service that once linked the city of Dibrugarh with Dhaka, Bangladesh’s capital, after a hiatus of several decades.
The first vessel, carrying a mixed cargo consignment, departed from Dibrugarh’s port early this week and is expected to reach Dhaka within a few days.
The resumption is seen as a boost to regional trade, offering a faster and more cost‑effective alternative to road and rail routes across the India–Bangladesh border.
Officials highlighted that the new service will facilitate the movement of goods such as agricultural produce, textiles and industrial raw materials, strengthening economic ties between the two countries.
The initiative follows a series of bilateral agreements aimed at improving connectivity and trade facilitation across the Bay of Bengal corridor.
