The Assam state government announced that any government employee found practising polygamy will be dismissed and barred from future recruitment.

Assam's state administration issued an official circular stating that civil servants who engage in polygamous marriages will face immediate termination of service. The directive applies to all government departments and agencies under the state jurisdiction.

The policy further stipulates that individuals dismissed under this rule will be ineligible for any future recruitment or promotion within Assam's public sector. The government cited the need to uphold legal and moral standards as prescribed by the Indian Penal Code and the state's employment regulations.

Legal experts noted that the move aligns with existing provisions that criminalise bigamy, while civil service officials are expected to verify marital status during routine background checks. The announcement has been circulated to district offices for implementation starting next month.
