Farmers in Rani, Assam, warn that incomplete solar‑powered fencing leaves their fields exposed to potential elephant incursions.
Farmers in the Rani block of Assam have voiced growing concern after a solar‑powered fencing project, aimed at preventing elephant incursions, was left unfinished. The incomplete barrier has left several fields vulnerable to damage from the local elephant population.
Local agricultural officials say the fencing was scheduled to be completed by the end of last month, but delays in material delivery and installation have stalled progress. Farmers report that elephants have already damaged crops in nearby villages, leading to significant economic losses.
The state government has acknowledged the issue and pledged to expedite the completion of the fencing. In the meantime, farmers are seeking alternative measures, such as temporary barriers and community patrols, to protect their livelihoods.
