Assam has sent a 540‑tonne consignment of methanol to Bangladesh, marking the first such shipment via the Brahmaputra waterway.

Assam's transport authorities announced that a cargo vessel has successfully moved 540 tonnes of methanol to Bangladesh using the Brahmaputra river route. The shipment, the first of its kind, underscores the growing utilisation of inland waterways for cross‑border trade between the two neighbours.

The methanol, a key industrial chemical, was loaded at a designated terminal on the Brahmaputra and navigated downstream to the Bangladesh border, where it will be transferred to local distributors. Officials highlighted that the waterway offers a cost‑effective and environmentally friendlier alternative to road transport for bulk commodities.

Trade officials from both states have welcomed the development, noting that regularised riverine shipments could boost regional commerce and reduce logistical bottlenecks. Plans are already underway to increase the frequency of such consignments, potentially expanding the range of chemicals and other goods moved via the river corridor.

The successful dispatch is expected to strengthen economic ties and set a precedent for future collaborative infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing connectivity across the sub‑continent's river networks.
