Assam CM says Delhi‑Guwahati bullet train will traverse the Chicken’s Neck corridor

New Delhi and Guwahati are slated to be connected by a high‑speed bullet train, a project that the central government has been advancing under its national rail modernization plan. During a recent press briefing, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed that the alignment will cut across the narrow Siliguri Corridor, popularly known as the Chicken’s Neck, which links the northeastern states with the rest of India.

The CM emphasized that routing the train through this corridor is essential to provide faster, direct connectivity for the northeast, reducing travel time dramatically compared with existing rail services. He also noted that the decision aligns with broader strategic and economic objectives, enhancing integration of the region with the national transport network.

While detailed engineering studies and land‑acquisition processes are still underway, the announcement signals a clear policy direction from both state and centre to prioritize the high‑speed link. Officials expect the project to boost tourism, trade and investment in Assam and the surrounding northeastern states once operational.
