The Assam cabinet has urged the Central Bureau of Investigation to probe the July floods that devastated Sivasagar and Charaideo districts, citing concerns over possible mismanagement and lack of preparedness.

The Assam cabinet, in a meeting held on Thursday, recommended that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) launch a formal inquiry into the floods that struck the Sivasagar and Charaideo districts in July. The decision follows reports of widespread damage to homes, roads and agricultural land, and allegations that local authorities failed to act promptly. The cabinet cited the need to investigate whether any negligence or corruption contributed to the disaster’s severity.

The CBI, which has jurisdiction over major crimes and large-scale incidents, will be tasked with examining the preparedness of state agencies, the adequacy of flood‑control measures, and the management of relief operations. Officials say the probe will also look into the procurement and deployment of resources during the crisis.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed confidence that the investigation would bring clarity and accountability. He added that the state would cooperate fully with the CBI and provide all necessary documents and access to sites.

The floods, which began in late June and peaked in early July, caused over 30 deaths and displaced thousands. The state government has already announced compensation packages for affected families.

The cabinet’s recommendation comes amid growing public demand for transparent accountability following the disaster.
