Officials from Assam and Arunachal Pradesh have commenced negotiations aimed at resolving their decades‑old border disagreement.
State officials from Assam and Arunachal Pradesh met this week to launch a series of talks intended to settle a long‑standing border dispute that dates back to the colonial era. Both governments said the dialogue will focus on demarcating the contested stretch of the Brahmaputra basin and addressing administrative ambiguities that have periodically sparked local tensions.
The two states have agreed to hold regular meetings, with a joint technical team tasked with examining historical maps, survey reports and on‑ground realities. While the central government has offered to facilitate the process, the parties emphasized that any settlement will be reached through mutual consent without external pressure.
If successful, the agreement could ease inter‑state friction, improve coordination on development projects, and provide a stable environment for residents living along the disputed line. Officials indicated that a preliminary report is expected within the next few weeks, after which further negotiations will continue.
