Olympic sprinter M.R. Poovamma, a gold medallist at the Asian Games, has appealed to the Karnataka government to raise the cash rewards offered to state athletes.

M.R. Poovamma, who clinched a gold medal for India in the 4x400 metres relay at the Asian Games, has publicly urged the Karnataka state administration to increase the monetary incentives provided to athletes. In a recent statement, the sprinter highlighted that higher cash rewards would recognize the dedication of sportspersons and encourage greater participation.
She pointed out that the existing incentive structure, while helpful, does not match the effort and international success achieved by many athletes from the state. Poovamma, a multiple national champion, argued that a revised scheme could bridge the gap between recognition and financial support.
The call comes at a time when several Indian states are reviewing sports policies to boost performance ahead of upcoming international events. While the Karnataka government has not yet responded, officials are expected to consider the suggestion as part of broader efforts to strengthen the state's athletic development program.
