The BJP in Arunachal Pradesh has endorsed the State Election Commission’s plan to purge bogus voter entries, despite facing criticism.

The Bharatiya Janata Party unit in Arunachal Pradesh publicly backed the State Election Commission's (SEC) initiative to eliminate fraudulent entries from the electoral roll. The party's statement came as the SEC announced a systematic verification exercise aimed at identifying and deleting bogus voters across the state.

Election officials say the clean‑up is necessary to preserve the integrity of upcoming polls, citing discrepancies discovered during recent data audits. The SEC has outlined a process that includes cross‑checking voter IDs, address proofs, and biometric records before any names are removed.

Critics, including opposition leaders and some civil‑society groups, have warned that the drive could inadvertently disenfranchise legitimate voters, especially in remote tribal areas where documentation is often scarce. They have called for greater transparency and safeguards.

The BJP, however, argued that removing fake entries is essential to prevent vote manipulation and to ensure a level playing field. The party urged the SEC to proceed swiftly while assuring that genuine voters will be protected.

The verification round is slated to begin next week, with the SEC promising to publish a final list of deletions after a period for objections.
