A university archaeology student has identified a previously unknown megalithic site close to the coastal village of Arambol in Goa.

A student pursuing archaeology at a local university reported the discovery of a megalithic complex just outside the fishing hamlet of Arambol on Goa's north‑west coast. The site, consisting of large stone arrangements and scattered burial markers, was first noticed during a field survey conducted by the student as part of a semester project.

Preliminary observations suggest the structures could belong to the megalithic culture that flourished in western India between 1500 BCE and 500 CE, although detailed dating will require systematic excavation. Such finds are rare in the coastal belt of Goa, where most known prehistoric monuments are inland.

State archaeological officials have been notified, and a team from the Goa Department of Archaeology is expected to conduct a formal assessment within the next few weeks. The department plans to secure the area to prevent looting and to document the layout using photogrammetry.

Researchers hope the site will shed new light on settlement patterns and ritual practices of ancient communities along the Konkan shoreline, while also offering a potential boost to cultural tourism in the region.
