Geologists explain that a tectonic rift that opened millions of years ago shaped the Chhattisgarh Basin in central India.
A recent geological analysis has traced the origins of the Chhattisgarh Basin to an ancient rift that opened during the Proterozoic era, roughly 1.5 billion years ago.
The rift, formed by the separation of the Indian subcontinent from the ancient supercontinent Rodinia, created a deep depression that later filled with thick sedimentary layers of sandstone, shale and coal.
Over successive geological periods these deposits have influenced present‑day groundwater flow, support diverse ecosystems and make the basin a focal point for mineral exploration in central India.
