The Allahabad High Court has asked the state government to finalize its stance on proposed restrictions for registering electric rickshaws in Uttar Pradesh.

The Allahabad High Court has issued a notice to the Uttar Pradesh government, seeking a clear decision on the draft rules that would tighten registration requirements for electric rickshaws (e‑rickshaws).

The proposed curbs aim to address concerns over unregulated growth of e‑rickshaws, safety standards and revenue losses from informal operations. Authorities had earlier suggested mandatory fitness certificates, higher registration fees and stricter route permits.

Legal experts note that the court’s intervention could accelerate the finalisation of the rules, which have been pending for several months. The outcome will affect thousands of e‑rickshaw owners and commuters across the state, especially in smaller towns where the vehicles are a primary mode of transport.

The bench has given the state a deadline of two weeks to submit its response, after which it will schedule a hearing to deliver a verdict.
