Ahmedabad’s AMTS Deploys AI‑Powered Cameras to Curb Speeding, Phone Use and Other Violations

The Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Service (AMTS) will install artificial‑intelligence based cameras on its fleet to generate real‑time alerts for speeding, mobile phone usage, smoking and driver fatigue.
Ahmedabad’s municipal transport authority announced that its fleet will be equipped with AI‑driven cameras capable of detecting unsafe driver behaviour. The system is designed to automatically flag instances of overspeeding, handheld mobile phone use, smoking and signs of driver drowsiness.
The cameras employ computer‑vision algorithms that analyse video feeds in real time and transmit instant alerts to a central monitoring hub, where operators can take immediate corrective action.
Transport officials said the technology aims to improve passenger safety, reduce accident risk and enforce existing traffic regulations without relying on manual patrols.
Implementation is slated to begin next month, with a phased rollout covering the busiest routes first, after which the authority will assess compliance improvements and consider expanding the system city‑wide.
