The All Assam Students' Union announced candlelight marches in several districts of Assam on October 29, demanding a swift and transparent probe into the death of singer Zubeen Garg.
The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) has called for candlelight marches across the state on October 29, seeking a prompt and impartial investigation into the recent death of celebrated Assamese singer Zubeen Garg. The union said the processions will begin at sunset, with participants carrying candles to symbolise demand for truth and accountability.
Garg was found dead under circumstances that have raised questions among fans and the wider public. While the police have opened a case, relatives and supporters allege that the inquiry lacks transparency, prompting AASU to mobilise students, cultural activists and ordinary citizens.
AASU officials indicated that the marches will be peaceful, urging attendees to follow law‑and‑order directives. They also plan to submit a written memorandum to the Assam state government and the police, urging them to expedite forensic analysis and disclose findings.
State authorities have not yet issued an official response to the planned protests. The candlelight events are expected to draw large crowds in major towns such as Guwahati, Jorhat and Silchar, reflecting the singer’s wide popularity and the public’s concern over the case.
The union hopes the collective demonstration will pressure officials to provide clear answers and ensure that any wrongdoing, if identified, is dealt with according to the law.
