The Airports Authority of India has begun pre‑feasibility assessments for three proposed greenfield airports in the Himalayan state of Sikkim, aiming to enhance regional connectivity.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) announced that it has started pre‑feasibility studies for three new greenfield airports in Sikkim. The assessments will examine technical, economic and environmental aspects to determine the viability of constructing airports on untouched sites within the state.

The proposed projects are part of a broader effort to improve air connectivity to the remote, mountainous region, which currently relies on a single operational airport at Pakyong. AAI officials said the studies will evaluate terrain challenges, land acquisition needs, projected passenger traffic and cost estimates.

If the studies yield positive results, the airports could boost tourism, trade and emergency services in Sikkim, aligning with the central government's push for better infrastructure in the North‑East. The timeline for detailed project reports and final approvals has not been disclosed.
