Aaditya Thackeray visited Dadar on Monday, condemning the police detention of students protesting near Shivaji Park and accusing the BJP of stifling peaceful dissent.
Police in Mumbai detained a group of students who were demonstrating near Shivaji Park, citing concerns over unauthorized assembly. The students were taken into custody while they were voicing grievances, prompting a swift reaction from local political leaders.
In response, Maharashtra youth affairs minister Aaditya Thackeray travelled to Dadar, where he addressed a crowd of supporters and condemned the police action as an attempt to silence peaceful protest. He directly blamed the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party for creating an atmosphere of fear that discourages legitimate dissent.
The detentions also extended to several senior activists, among them former anti-corruption campaigner Anjali Damania, who were arrested under the same preventive provisions. Authorities said the arrests were carried out in compliance with a court order that mandates pre‑emptive measures against unauthorised gatherings.
Thackeray warned that the crackdown could trigger wider agitation across the city if the government does not address the concerns of students and civil society groups.
