The East Khasi Hills district administration has ordered that all LPG cylinder refills must be verified through Aadhaar biometric authentication, effective immediately.
The East Khasi Hills district authorities announced that, from today, every LPG cylinder refill will require Aadhaar biometric verification. The directive, issued by the district administration, mandates that distributors use fingerprint or iris scanners linked to the central Aadhaar database before dispensing gas.
Officials say the move aims to curb illegal cylinder diversion and ensure that subsidised LPG reaches genuine beneficiaries. By tying each refill to a unique biometric ID, the administration hopes to tighten supply chain monitoring and reduce leakages in the system.
The district has instructed all authorised LPG dealers to install biometric terminals at their outlets and to maintain digital logs of each transaction. Non‑compliant dealers may face penalties, including suspension of their distribution licence.
Consumer groups have raised concerns about privacy and the practicality of carrying Aadhaar cards to refill points, but the administration maintains that the measure is essential for transparent delivery of the LPG scheme and will be enforced strictly.
