A new rule requires candidates to secure at least 75% in driving license tests and makes several Regional Transport Office services free online to improve transparency and road safety.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has introduced a new regulation aimed at enhancing transparency in Regional Transport Offices (RTO) and improving road safety across the country. Under the rule, applicants for a driving licence must achieve a minimum of 75 percent marks in the written and practical examinations, replacing the earlier pass criteria.

The change is intended to ensure that only competent drivers are licensed, thereby reducing accidents caused by insufficient knowledge or skill. In addition to the stricter pass mark, the government has announced that a range of key RTO services – including licence application, renewal and duplicate issuance – will be provided free of charge through online portals.

By moving these services to digital platforms, authorities aim to cut down processing time, eliminate corruption and make the licensing process more accessible to citizens nationwide. The new measures are to be implemented by all RTOs immediately.
