Seventy‑four additional villages in Odisha have been declared tsunami‑ready under UNESCO’s disaster‑risk reduction programme, raising the state’s total to one hundred villages.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has added 74 villages in Odisha to its tsunami‑ready list, bringing the state’s tally to 100 villages under the programme. The certification follows a series of capacity‑building workshops, risk‑mapping exercises and the installation of early‑warning equipment in the newly included settlements.
State officials said the villages were assessed against UNESCO’s criteria, which include community awareness, evacuation routes, and the presence of functional siren systems. Local disaster‑management teams received training on rapid response protocols to ensure that residents can evacuate safely in the event of a sea‑borne surge.
The move is part of a broader effort to strengthen coastal resilience along India’s eastern shoreline, where the Bay of Bengal poses a persistent tsunami threat. Authorities hope that the expanded coverage will serve as a model for other vulnerable coastal districts across the country.
UNESCO representatives praised Odisha’s commitment, noting that the state’s proactive approach aligns with the agency’s global goal of reducing loss of life and property from natural hazards.
