Police in Assam detained 57 men suspected of being illegal Bangladeshi nationals at Kamakhya railway station, and have launched a probe into a possible link with Srinagar.

Guwahati, Assam – State police announced that 57 individuals believed to be illegal Bangladeshi nationals were taken into custody at Kamakhya railway station on Monday. The detainees were intercepted during routine checks by immigration officials stationed at the busy transit hub.

According to officials, the men were identified based on discrepancies in their travel documents and were subsequently handed over to the district magistrate for further legal action. The police have not disclosed any specific charges yet, pending a detailed investigation.

Investigators also said they are probing a possible connection between the detained group and a network that allegedly operates through Srinagar, though the exact nature of the link remains under inquiry. The probe aims to uncover any cross‑border smuggling or illegal migration routes.

The incident comes amid heightened vigilance by northeastern states to curb illegal immigration from Bangladesh. Authorities have urged the public to report any suspicious activity at transport hubs.

No arrests beyond the initial detention have been reported, and the police have not released the identities of the individuals involved.
