Heavy rainfall in Uttar Pradesh has claimed 57 lives and damaged more than 1,020 houses, authorities say.
Heavy rains that began on Thursday have turned several districts of Uttar Pradesh into a scene of devastation. The state government reports that 57 people have lost their lives, while more than 1,020 houses have suffered damage ranging from structural cracks to complete collapse.
The most affected areas are the districts of Basti, Azamgarh and Gorakhpur, where sudden downpours caused flash floods and landslides. Rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local police are working round the clock to search for missing persons and provide relief to displaced families.
The Uttar Pradesh Disaster Management Authority has issued a red alert for the remaining districts, urging residents to stay indoors and avoid low-lying areas. The government has also set up emergency shelters and is coordinating with the Red Cross for medical assistance.
