A Kolkata Police survey released this week indicates that four‑wheelers were involved in the majority of road accidents recorded in the city during 2025.
The Kolkata Police has published the results of a comprehensive traffic safety survey covering the full calendar year 2025. The data shows that four‑wheel motor vehicles were implicated in the highest number of road collisions across the metropolitan area.
The survey, compiled from police FIRs, traffic reports and hospital records, examined accident patterns by vehicle type, time of day and location. While two‑wheelers and pedestrians also featured, four‑wheelers consistently topped the list in terms of frequency.
Police officials said the trend underscores the need for stricter enforcement of speed limits, seat‑belt usage and regular vehicle maintenance. They also highlighted ongoing awareness campaigns targeting private car owners and commercial fleet operators.
The department plans to share the detailed findings with the state transport authority and municipal bodies to shape future road‑safety policies and reduce the casualty rate in Kolkata.
