A recent count in Madhya Pradesh’s Kuno National Park shows that out of 54 cheetahs, 38 were born in India, while 16 are of foreign origin, with 28 cubs under one year present.

Madhya Pradesh’s Kuno National Park now hosts 54 cheetahs, according to the latest wildlife census. Of these, 38 individuals were born on Indian soil, while the remaining 16 are of foreign origin, reflecting the success of the park’s breeding programme.

The predominance of Indian‑born cheetahs marks a milestone for the country’s effort to re‑establish a viable wild population after the species’ historic disappearance from the subcontinent. Conservationists attribute the rise to careful habitat management, anti‑poaching measures, and the introduction of a small number of genetically diverse cheetahs from abroad.

The park also records 28 cubs that are less than a year old, indicating a healthy recruitment rate. Experts say continued monitoring and protection of these young animals will be crucial to sustain the growing native cohort and eventually reduce reliance on foreign stock.
