A 12th‑standard student in Sunam, Punjab, consumed poison after receiving low marks and succumbed to her injuries five days later.

A teenage girl studying in the 12th standard was found dead in Sunam, a town in Punjab, after a brief hospitalization. According to early reports, the student had taken a lethal dose of poison following the release of her examination results, which she described as disappointing.

Family members said the girl received lower marks than she expected, and the shock prompted her to ingest the toxic substance. She was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors attempted emergency treatment.

Despite intensive medical care, the girl’s condition deteriorated, and she passed away after five days of hospitalization. The incident has shocked the local community and raised concerns about the pressure faced by students during board examinations.

Local authorities have opened an inquiry to ascertain the exact circumstances surrounding the suicide and to assess whether any support mechanisms were lacking for the student. Mental‑health counselors have been urged to increase outreach in schools across the region.
