A 12‑year‑old boy was killed after a leopard attacked him in a remote area of North Kashmir, officials said.
A leopard entered a village in the northern part of Kashmir and mauled a 12‑year‑old boy, leading to his death, local authorities reported on Tuesday. The child was playing near the outskirts of his home when the animal suddenly charged, and despite immediate attempts by villagers to rescue him, he succumbed to his injuries.
Police and forest‑department officials arrived at the scene within hours, cordoned off the area and began a search for the predator. The leopard was later located and neutralised by a wildlife response team to prevent further attacks.
The incident has reignited concerns over human‑wildlife conflict in the region, with officials urging residents to avoid venturing near forest edges after dusk and to report any sightings promptly.
Authorities have also announced a review of compensation for the victim's family and are planning awareness drives on coexistence with wildlife in the fragile Himalayan ecosystem.
