A truck reportedly suffered a mechanical failure and ploughed into a group of devotees at the gate of a temple in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, killing 12 people.
A heavy truck entered the premises of a popular temple in Gwalior and collided with a gathering of worshippers standing at the main gate. Emergency services were rushed to the scene after witnesses reported a loud crash followed by screams.
Preliminary reports from the police and local authorities indicate that the vehicle may have suffered a mechanical failure, causing it to lose control and barrel into the crowd. Rescue teams worked through the night to extricate victims from the wreckage, and twelve bodies were later confirmed dead while several others sustained injuries.
The incident has prompted a forensic investigation to determine the exact cause of the truck's malfunction. Police spokespersons said they are also examining whether road conditions or driver fatigue contributed to the tragedy.
The temple, a major pilgrimage site in the city, was temporarily closed as officials coordinated with families of the deceased and arranged for medical aid. Local officials have pledged to review safety protocols around crowded religious venues to prevent similar accidents in the future.
